Probe cuts fake homeless claims
BBC News Channel / 5th June 2008
People on a housing waiting list in Northamptonshire have faked being homeless to gain a higher priority

Daventry District Council said it has begun to investigate claims from applicants, and has seen homelessness figures drop 25%.

The council is now warning applicants that they face a £5,000 fine, a criminal record and could lose their home if they submit false information.

The Housing Options team said it will increase time spent on investigations.
'More investigations'

Maria Taylor, the council's community corporate manager, said a person making a false claim is also likely to be suspended from the housing waiting list for up to five years.

She added: "Some people can try all sorts of ploys in a bid to move themselves up the housing waiting list.

"This is not a victimless crime. People with a genuine need could lose out to people making fraudulent claims and we are determined to stamp this out.

"We will now be carrying out more investigations, including additional visits to properties, to check on people's claims on their application form."
