Mother denies car insurance fraud plot
Telegraph & Argus / 6th November 2008
A mother accused of plotting a crash-for-cash insurance scam told a jury the car accident she is accused of inventing was perfectly genuine.

Sarah Lowther said she and her three children were injured in a smash involving her BMW and a Nissan in May 2006. Lowther, 37, told Bradford Crown Court yesterday she took the youngsters, aged 12, 11 and eight, to casualty as a precaution. She submitted an insurance claim and was paid out £7,100 for the car. Lowther and her partner, Keighley garage owner Mohammed Rashid, deny separate conspiracy charges. Rashid also pleads not guilty to acquiring criminal property. Prosecutor Andrew Kershaw alleges the couple invented road accidents to defraud insurance companies. Rashid, 37, known as Mojo, is accused of masterminding a scam from his premises, Autotransform, on Spearhead Way, Keighley. Mr Kershaw told the jury Rashid, of Rylstone Street, Keighley, corrupted a consultant motor engineer into taking part in the fraud. Lowther, 37, of Bradford Road, Keighley, said £4,500 in her bank account when she was arrested came from the BMW insurance payout. She said she had not wanted to see the damaged BMW again after the accident and thought of using public transport as a safer option. The trial continues
